Campbell was educated at Camden Grammar School and Hawkesbury Agricultural College. He had been working as a station overseer at Marathon Station, Marathon Queensland when he enlisted at Rose Hill 13 October 1914 and served with the 7th Light Horse Regiment A.I.F.

He departed Sydney on the 'Ayrshire' 20 December 1914.

Trooper Campbell THROSBY was serving at Gallipoli when he contracted dysentry in September 1915. His condition became progressively worse and he died from this disease at the 1st Australian General Hospital, Cairo, Egypt on 29 February 1916 age 33.
